Suunto Lumi: ejemplo de transparencia

Suunto Lumi

Otra vez Suunto.

“Suunto was born in 1936 when Tuomas Vohlonen invented the liquid-filled compass. Essential to Finnish troops during World War II – who needed to know where they were in a flat country full of ice, snow and dense forests – it also set the direction Suunto would follow over the next 70 years – measurement. With that core competence Suunto is able to replace the need for luck, by giving people more personal control of their environment””With the 80s came computers, and the new digital world enabled Suunto to develop its first dive computers. These devices calculated water pressure and temperature and provided information on how to conduct a safe dive. Eventually they replaced the need for tables, as well as luck! The dramatic drop in diving accidents is directly related to this innovation and Suunto today is the world leader in this field””As the 90s progressed, heart rate information became available. For the first time, Suunto could tell a hiker what was happening inside his body as well as what was going on in the surrounding environment. Today, hikers, adventurer racers, mountain bikers, soldiers and many others replace luck as they excel, thanks to Suunto“”Suunto products doesn’t just tell you your heart rate or calorie consumption; it makes an in-depth analysis of your body’s performance by measuring 7 core body functions and provides you with precise results of your training. Olympic athletes, who dedicate all their time, energy and focus – their life in fact – to their sport, do not want to rely on luck when they compete and Suunto doesn’t believe they should have to

“Suunto has a passion to create sports instruments that allow you to measure, analyze, understand and improve your performance””Suunto enhances sports experiences by providing accurate and relevant information, inspiring users to reach their full potential””Suunto’s goal is to be the world’s most desired sports instrument brand”

Design & Usability

If you put together a group of professional designers, one psychologist and a cognitive scientist with various sports backgrounds including orienteering, free diving, surfing, sailing, triathlon, swimming, cycling, snowboarding and boxing you end up with the Suunto design group. I do not think there is (or even could be) a more versatile team at Suunto than the design group.

The design group was formed when two designers working at Suunto R&D hammered through the importance of the team in so many meetings, that nobody in the company could deny it anymore. Now the group holds an important role inside Suunto, bringing together the R&D, marketing, sales and production departments. And most importantly by taking care of the “look and feel” design of all Suunto products.

The group is full of creative guys. This is probably not the easiest team to work with though, being a little bit on the artistic side.

For the wrists of our loyal users, we at Suunto are constantly exchanging ideas and suggestions. This in fact brings up the point of usability, the inherent design principle of the whole group. Every single design decision is and will be, in one way or another, based on usability and our end users needs. All in all, the design group’s core competence is an ability to combine design, usability and concept research into the package of a small wrist top computer.

“They call me a sports nerd – but that´s ok… I work at Suunto R&D with a bunch of other similar minded YUP´s, Young Useful Propeller heads… Besides being a technology freak – which I am proud of – I also have a softer side: I understand that aesthetics is important in product design”
